Position Title: Maintenance Person 

Department: Maintenance 

Location: Delta Hotels Halifax Downtown, NS 

Reports To: Chief Engineer 

Employment Type: Hourly, Full-Time 

Availability: Full-Time: 28 – 40 hours/week 

Rate of Pay: $22.39-23.39 per hour  

Start Date: April 2026 

General Overview:  

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, at Delta Hotels Halifax Downtown, the Maintenance Person contributes to the consistency of departmental and brand standards by repairing and maintaining all hotel facilities, rooms, grounds and equipment. They are passionate about problem solving, serving others and working as a team with associates from all departments.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • General repairs in guest rooms. 
  • Minor repairs in electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. 
  • Minor carpentry, such as patching holes in walls and vinyl. 
  • Repairs to office equipment. 
  • Maintenance of swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna. 
  • Demonstrates familiarity with the hotels life safety systems and takes corrective action on any maintenance or operating issues which affect the security of the hotel. 
  • Service maintenance requests from guests and associates in a friendly and professional manner. 
  • Complies with all provincial and federal regulations pertaining to building and fire code requirements, health and life safety programs. 
  • Completes duties such as light bulb replacement, painting, dry wall repair. 
  • Completes utility readings and consumptions. 
  • Ensure the security of keys, company information, guest information and guest rooms at all times. 
  • Report unsafe work conditions, areas requiring repair or suspicious person to the Department Head. 
  • Understand and practice the correct usage and storage of chemicals in line with health and safety regulations and manufacturers’ instructions. 
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment such as gloves and biohazard disposal containers when required. 
  • Enter guest rooms following procedures for gaining access and ensuring vacancy before entering. 
  • Be aware of the action to be taken in the event of an emergency such as fire in accordance with procedures. 
  • Committed to providing exceptional customer service working within the guidelines set out by procedures and the brand. 
  • Follows through on guest requests and takes action immediately. 
  • Treat each individual with respect and fosters a cooperative, productive, positive and respectful work place. 
  • Work and communicate in a professional and ethical manner; assist coworkers where necessary. 
  • Actively sell any special promotions, the brand, and facilities available to the guest in order to contribute to overall profitability. 
  • Provide information to guests about local attractions, hotel services, hotel facilities and other amenities. 
  • Assist with team member orientation and training as required. 
  • Maintain standards of punctuality, uniform presentation and personal hygiene. 
  • Attend meetings as required and recognize the importance of contributing new ideas and initiative to the overall success of the operation. 
  • Contribute to cost control through energy conservation and correct usage and storage of all materials/equipment. 
  • Communicate effectively with the Housekeeping and Front Desk department regarding ready rooms and those required to be out of order. 
  • Provides a favorable image of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts and the Brand to the public by consistently demonstrating SilverBirch Values (Engagement, Quality, Performance, Integrity and Growth). 
  • Other related duties and projects as assigned.

  • Familiar with the operation of a Building Energy Management System 
  • Familiar with the operation of Digital HVAC Controls 
  • Basic understanding of Internet Hardware 
  • Basic Computer Skills 

Preferred Education & Qualifications: 

  • 1-year previous maintenance experience is required 
  • Have either electrical, plumbing, building systems, carpentry or HVAC knowledge. Valid ticket is an asset 
  • WHMIS training is an asset but can be provided by the hotel  
  • Previous experience in an environment with a strong health and safety program is an asset 
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written in English 

Working Conditions: 

  • Physically fit and able to push, pull, and lift up to 30 lbs. and to bend and kneel with comfort 
  • Fast paced environment that is often demanding 
  • Stand, walk and remain on feet to perform job duties for entire shift duration 
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling and stooping 
  • Use of cleaning chemicals 
  • Available for workingweekends, statutory holidays and evenings as required
