Gold Quill Award Winner

SILVERBIRCH HOTELS & RESORTS WINS GOLD QUILL AWARD FOR CHANGE MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY

Vancouver, BC, May 5, 2015 – SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts has earned a prestigious Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for an employee communications strategy to support the successful implementation of major infrastructure and system upgrades across 16 hotel properties.

IABC recognized SilverBirch with an Excellence Award in the Change Communications category for Project Fusion, the roll-out of a suite of technological infrastructure standardizing reporting processes that increased the accuracy of business information from all of its hotel properties. The introduction of Project Fusion also helped reduce manual work, increased efficiency, and minimized error in time capturing to help reduce potential overpayments.

“Project Fusion was a multi-phase, company-wide initiative for SilverBirch and communicating its significance to employees and getting their support was integral to the successful implementation,” says Steve Giblin, CEO & President of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “Effective employee engagement is core to SilverBirch’s continued success, so it is gratifying when we are recognized for our efforts in this area.”

To support Project Fusion, SilverBirch developed and implemented a robust internal communication and change management plan – Telling the Project Fusion Story – to engage employees, increase project awareness and understanding, and incorporate the project into the corporate narrative. A number of tactics were used to tell the story to different stakeholders, including the development of a project brand, a dedicated intranet site, project video, posters, regular email updates, training, conference calls, team meetings, town hall meetings, email, electronic round-table discussions, and in person meetings.

“There is clear evidence of strategic thinking and linkages between the different target audiences and communication channels,” noted the Gold Quill evaluators, adding that the employee centric approach SilverBirch used to develop key messages was particularly effective in achieving its aims.

IABC is recognized as the professional association of choice for communicators who aspire to excel in their chosen fields. The annual Gold Quill Awards have recognized and awarded excellence in strategic communication worldwide for more than 40 years. The IABC 2015 Gold Quill Awards will be presented at an Excellence Gala on June 15 as part of the IABC’s World Conference in San Francisco.

The Gold Quill is the second award Project Fusion has generated for SilverBirch. Saskatoon, SK, October 31, 2016 – Competing against seven of the city’s culinary best, Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s Executive Chef Scott Torgerson claimed first place at Gold Medal Plates Culinary Competition in Saskatoon. Torgerson’s win came less than 24 hours after returning home victorious from the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the largest and most prestigious culinary competition in the world.

“It is an honour to win a Gold Medal at home in Saskatoon,” says Chef Torgerson. “I share this award with my incredible team at the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon and Aroma Resto Bar. It is because of their continuous hard work, dedication and support that allows us the ability to prepare and compete against some of the world’s best chefs.”

The gold medal win secures Chef Torgerson a coveted spot at the Canadian Culinary Championships, The Gold Medal Plates Finale, in Kelowna, BC, February 3-4, 2017. The win is one of many recent accolades for Chef Torgerson. As a member of the 2016 Culinary Team Canada Olympic team, Chef Torgerson helped win three gold and two silver medals in Erfurt, Germany, before arriving home to defend his 2015 second place finish at last year’s Gold Medal Plates Saskatoon.

Chef Torgerson’s winning plate featured a black trumpet crusted roast elk and Cactus Lake beef tenderloin with porcini and sunchoke foam, plated with broccoli puree, parsnip, beef tendon puff, pearl onion, and micro cress. Helping to balance the flavours, the dish was paired with the 2014 Inniskillin Discovery Series Zinfandel from Inniskillin, Okanagan, BC.

Judged by a panel of eight, each dish was awarded points based on visual presentation, texture, technical achievement, taste, wine compatibility, and wow factor. Visitors can experience Chef Torgerson’s award-winning culinary skills at Aroma Resto Bar at the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon.

Founded in 2003, Gold Medal Plates Culinary Competition is an annual celebration of Canadian Excellence in cuisine, wine, the arts and athletic achievement. Every year, premier chefs across Canada compete for the gold, silver and bronze medal. Vancouver-based SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts and the company’s President & CEO, Steve Giblin, has been awarded the top recognition by Hilton Worldwide for Developer of the Year for Multi-Brand.

Canada has become a major growth market for Hilton’s focused service hotels, and SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts continues to produce premier quality hotels for multiple Hilton-branded properties. Recipients are awarded based on criteria that include unique hotels developed, total number and quality of hotels, impact on community and fastest construction time.

The company announced a recent partnership between Hilton and SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts to bring the first dual-branded hotel property to Nova Scotia. By the spring of 2014, travelers looking for accommodations in downtown Halifax will have two new hotel options at the former site of the Citadel Halifax Hotel.

“We recognize the importance of our developers’ contributions,” said Craig A. Mance, North American development, Hilton Worldwide. “It is our privilege to acknowledge SilverBirch’s commitment to the development of the Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton dual-branded hotel in Halifax with the Developer of the Year for Multi-Brand Award.”

SilverBirch is investing $62 million in the Halifax redevelopment for the dual branded hotels of Homewood Suites by Hilton, the international brand of upscale, all-suite, residential-style hotels, and Hampton Hotels, the award-winning leader in the mid-priced hotel segment. Both hotels will be constructed simultaneously and housed within two 13-story towers and will include a shared conference center, as well as a fitness center, retail space and parking.

The Developer of the Year award also recognizes SilverBirch’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The summer demolition of the Halifax site includes reducing the amount of materials that enter the waste stream. A recycle program for materials including carpets, underlays, toilets, sinks, tubs, doors, miscellaneous mill work, and metals is underway.  Approximately 6,500 tonnes of concrete is being sent to a facility where it can be crushed and re-used.

Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s culinary team – Canadian Culinary Federation Conference Awards

RADISSON HOTEL SASKATOON’S CULINARY TEAM EARNS ACCOLADES AT CANADIAN CULINARY FEDERATION CONFERENCE

Saskatoon, SK, May 26, 2016 – The culinary team at SilverBirch Hotels & Resort’s Radisson Hotel Saskatoon continues to earn accolades, the latest coming at the recent Canadian Culinary Federation (CCFCC) Conference in Windsor, Ontario.

Michael Weckworth, a chef de partie at Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s AROMA Resto Bar, won a silver medal in the CCFCC Senior Culinary Competition. He impressed the judges with two dishes: a lemon and beet cured trout, lemon grass mussels, asparagus tips, butternut purée, butter braised leeks, crispy fingerlings, pickled beet, and beurre blanc sauce; and a chimichurri flank steak, leek ash goat cheese, roast tomato sauce, asparagus purée, fennel, cubed butternut, pickled onion pedals, and paprika lentil crumble. Michael earned the right to represent Saskatchewan in his category after winning the CCFCC Senior Culinary Competition in March.

Brooklyn Lusignan-Beauchamp, a culinary student at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and a cook at Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s AROMA Resto Bar, represented the province in her category at the conference after winning the CCFCC Saputo Junior Culinary Competition in March. She prepared three dishes: an appetizer consisting of caramelized green apple and brie tortellini with chardonnay cream, shallot compote and almond crumb, served with white asparagus nasturtium salad; an entrée that featured cheddar soufflé with baby fennel, braised leek, kale, butternut squash puree, and pickled hon shimeji mushroom; and for dessert, ricotta Bavarian and ricotta beignets accompanied by balsamic cherries, lemon curd, oat and hazelnut crumble, honeycomb, and wild berry gel.

The two were accompanied by Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s award winning Executive Sous Chef, Chris Corkum, who is the representative for Canada at the Global Culinary Challenge in Thessaloniki Greece in September 2016. Chef Chris cooked courses at the CCFCC President’s Ball on the final day of the convention. For this honour, he was awarded a cheque for $5,000 towards his training and trip to Thessaloniki.

In addition, Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s award winning Executive Chef, Scott Torgerson was recognized at the conference for the team’s contributions to the culinary arts in our country and on the world stage. He is coach and mentor to Chef Chris, Michael and Brooklyn, and is also the newest member of Culinary Team Canada, which will be representing the country at the Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung (IKA) Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in October 2016.
