VANCOUVER, B.C., December 16, 2011 – SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts today announced two new hotel partnerships with Marriott International, Inc., and will open TownePlace Suites by Marriott® near Toronto Pearson International Airport in the summer 2012 and Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott® in St. John’s in early 2013.
“Our partnering with Marriott on these two projects is an important next step in SilverBirch’s growth strategy in key markets across Canada,” said Steve Giblin, President and CEO, SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “These two partnerships, along with the one we announced last month for the Residence Inn by Marriott Downtown Vancouver, give us a stronger presence nationally. And as we continue to focus on growth in key markets, we will work with Marriott and other leading international hotel brands to explore further opportunities.”
“TownePlace Suites by Marriott® is a relatively new, Extended Stay brand in Canada, and we are excited to introduce it to the Metro Toronto marketplace,” said Michael Beckley, Senior Vice President, Lodging Development, Marriott Hotels and Resorts Canada. “Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott® is one of our more established brands, with more than 670 locations across North America.”
SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts, already one of Canada’s leading hotel and resort management companies, is investing $123 million in the first phase of its growth strategy in key markets across the country. “Our growth strategy reflects our confidence in the Canadian economy and the strength of the tourism, travel and conference business,” said Giblin.
Today’s announcement includes a $17 million complete revitalization of the former Sandalwood Hotel in Toronto that will see the 173-room hotel become only the second TownePlace Suites by Marriott® in Canada. Conveniently located near Highway 401 and Highway 427, and only minutes away from Toronto Pearson International Airport, the hotel will offer comfortable long-term stays, featuring spacious suites with fully-equipped kitchens, a pool, free WiFi and complimentary breakfast.
In St. John’s, SilverBirch is undertaking a complete $21 million re-build on the former site of the Travellers Inn St. John’s. When it re-opens as a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott®, it will feature 148 suites, complimentary WiFi, a pool with a waterslide, a fitness area, free breakfast and a site for a restaurant.
In addition, SilverBirch recently announced a $60 million redevelopment of the Citadel Hotel in Halifax, transforming it into a mixed-used facility, featuring two new hotels, a residential building combined with restaurant and retail space that will open in the fall 2013, and a $25 million “head-to-toe” revitalization of the Cascadia Hotel and Suites in Vancouver that will see the hotel become the newest Residence Inn by Marriott® in the summer 2012.
