Interview: Elise Vogels, Human Resources & Intranet Advisor, SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts
In 2012 Elise moved to Vancouver on a whim from Lethbridge, AB just after finishing University, where she got her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources and a Minor in Social Responsibility. She values community involvement, social responsibility, and loves being part of a team that shares these same values. Some of her favorite things are her family, being outdoors and trying new things.
SBHR: In your new role you are interacting with members of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts on many levels and from many disciplines. What values assist you with these interactions?
EV: I find that it’s really easy to allow the values to guide you in your interactions with others at SilverBirch, because they’re something that we all have in common. If I had to pick one though, it would be engagement. I believe that a genuine and enthusiastic attitude can really help create great relationships and great teamwork.
SBHR: What value is most important when you think about your role?
EV: Integrity. In Human Resources, as in any department, it’s really important that you always do the right thing. My actions can affect others in a lot of ways and I want to make sure the impacts that I’m having on others are fair and ethical. As HR it’s also important that we’re good role models; asking myself if I’m doing the right thing is a great way to make sure I’m being a good role model.
SBHR: what do you “value” the most in your role?
EV: Growth. I love learning and trying new things. I try to push myself into new and difficult situations as often as possible, because they get easier every time! I’m very lucky that there has been room for me to grow my skills in my role at SilverBirch.
SBHR: Of all of our values, which one influences your day to day activities the most?
EV: Performance – do it well. I think that’s a very important value that’s in all of our jobs and in everything that we do.
SBHR: I understand that you are a member of the SilverBirch Corporate Success Committee this committee is involved in many different programs and initiatives. How do our values play a part in this committee?
EV: Everything that the Success Committee does is aimed at engaging our associates. Whether it’s participating in an offsite volunteer activity or a fundraising initiative for a local charity – we focus on activities and ideas that will involve and engage our coworkers. The other values help guide us by acting as “checks and balances”. Are we exceeding expectations? Are we doing this well? They’re all very important.
SBHR: This month is host to World Kindness Day. For events or special celebrations such as these which of our values do you think is top of mind for all involved?
EV: Two of our values come to mind: Engagement – Care, and Integrity – Do the right thing. We are very fortunate to be in a position where we are able to do the right thing and give back to the communities that we are members of. For special events like World Kindness Day, it’s our engagement and the fact that we care that drives us to participate and get involved.
