If there’s one lesson every holiday party planner learns, it’s this: book early or be disappointed! As we all know, the holiday season fills up fast – with events like family dinners, annual ugly Christmas sweater parties, and year-end office celebrations, I typically find myself with no free weekends in the month of December. That being said, if you’re thinking of throwing a party of your own, here are a few helpful tips & tricks to ensure your event is a success:
Party planning is not something that should be left until last minute. Seriously, plan ahead! In most cases, this not only allows you to lock down the best venue for your party, but the advanced notice also gives your guests time to RSVP while their schedules are still open… meaning you’re penned into their calendars before all the other events start popping up.
Pick a Theme
There are a few great perks of adding a theme to your party. Not only does it make deciding on decorations a little easier, but it’s also fun for guests and gives them a better idea of dress code. For example, this year DoubleTree by Hilton™ Hotel and Conference Centre Regina is hosting their second annual black tie NYE gala where all guests are encouraged to wear white. This classy event consists of a champagne reception, open bar, fabulous food, and the swinging sounds of the Bob Moyer Big Band orchestra… And because they followed tip #1, this event is nearly sold out!
Consider a Shared Party
For smaller companies, multi-office holiday parties have been an emerging trend the last couple of years. They are a great option as they’re typically stress-free and budget friendly. Leave all the set up and tear down to the professionals; just arrive, and enjoy the occasion with your guests. On December 2nd, Radisson Hotel Edmonton South is hosting a multi-office Christmas party where companies from all across Edmonton will be gathering in their newly renovated Jubilee Ballroom for a fabulous holiday lunch featuring live holiday music, door prizes and much more.
If you’re planning on serving alcohol at your party, be responsible and ensure your guests don’t drink and drive. You can do this by handing out taxi vouchers, or even arranging a special room rate with a nearby hotel for your guests. For example, this December, Best Western Charlottetown will be offering a ‘Take the Elevator Home’ rate while hotels like Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn by Hilton™ Halifax-Downtown are offering a similar ‘Sleepover in the City’ promotion. Packages like these are great for dry events as well because sometimes you just don’t feel like driving home after a long night of festivities.
When it finally comes time for your big (or small!) event, it can be all too easy to get caught up in hosting mode. So if you catch yourself running around like a chicken with your head cut off, take a deep breath and don’t forget to enjoy the party yourself. Because at the end of the day, you want your guests remembering things like the lovely atmosphere, great company, and delicious food rather than a comically frazzled, bug-eyed party planner.
