Occurring on the second Monday in October, Thanksgiving celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in most parts of Canada, with the exceptions being the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, where it is an optional holiday.
Traditions such as parades can be a part of Thanksgiving in Canada, such as the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest parade. The Canadian Football League holds a nationally televised doubleheader, the Thanksgiving Day Classic. It is one of two weeks in which the league plays on Monday afternoons, the other being the Labour Day Classic.
In my family, we celebrate (and indulge!) on the Sunday before the Monday holiday. This way we have time to sleep off all the carbs and of course the turkey we have consumed.
While most people have a favorite side dish, the star of the show really is the bird. I love all the fall veggies such as squash, sweet potatoes (anyone know the difference between a yam and a sweet potato?) and even Brussels sprouts, but without the turkey, it would just be a plate of odd smelling vegetables. Different chefs have different ideas about the best way to prepare a turkey – from roasting to deep frying to BBQing. Personally I like the traditional roasted turkey the best.
And in my opinion, the best part of the meal is not having to prepare it! Lots of restaurants offer amazing holiday menus as well as take out options.
Take out is a great way to enjoy this special meal in the comfort of your own home but without the stack of dishes in the sink to deal with. Restaurants at some hotels such as Quality Hotel and Conference Centre, Fort McMurray and Radisson Hotel Edmonton South offer ‘Turkey Take Out’ promotions around the Holidays to help save you time, and allow your family to truly enjoy Thanksgiving dinner without the stress of cooking, baking, and cleaning! All you have to do is call the hotel and place your order before October 9th, and then come pick-up your turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
But, if you’re more of a DIY’er, and are looking for a flavourful new dish to try this Holiday, make sure to check out Chef Jo’s Oyster & Cornbread Stuffing recipe. It’s sure to impress your guests!
No matter how you celebrate the Holidays, here at SilverBirch, we hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
