November 13 is World Kindness Day. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement a coalition of nations kindness NGOs. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates. In 2009, Singapore, Italy, and India observed the day for the first time.
As the organization explains, kindness does not have to mean adopting all the children from your local orphanage; it can be much simpler than that. A simple gesture such as holding a door open for someone carrying a heavy load is kindness and we should all practice it every day of our lives – not just one day a year.
While SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts associates are committed to kindness every day of the year, the company sponsors “Kindness Week” at all hotels across Canada.
During this week, associates focus on giving back to their community and each other. Kindness Week activities have included:
- Fundraisers for disadvantaged youth
- Blood donor drives
- Building with Habitat for Humanity
- Working at local food banks
- Providing free coffee and muffins for the community
- Planting trees
- And a number of additional lively activities!
At SilverBirch Hotels & Resort corporate office the team participated in a number of activities in honor of Kindness Day. Last year they gave donations to Dress4 Success and Working Gear, volunteered at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. They were also “kind to vendors” by giving gifts to them as they delivered items to the office telling them that they are appreciated, and they hosted a Lunch and Learn where Corporate associates talked about their volunteer experiences.
There is also a wonderful organization called The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. They believe in inspiring a culture of kindness in schools, homes and communities. Often unexpected random acts of kindness can inspire others to do the same for others and I think we can all agree that more kindness in this world would make it a better place.
