Partnerships with Clean the World Foundation, Tree Canada and other green initiatives earn hotels TripAdvisor GreenLeaders status
Vancouver, B.C., October 28, 2014 – SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts proudly announces that six of its hotels across Canada have been recognized as TripAdvisor GreenLeaders for demonstrating significant efforts to implement environmentally friendly practices. GreenLeaders hotels are allocated the award at three levels – Gold, Silver and Bronze Level – to indicate the level of commitment to reducing their environmental footprint.
The recognised properties include:
• Residence Inn® by Marriott Vancouver Downtown – GreenLeaders Gold Level
• Radisson Hotel Edmonton South – GreenLeaders Bronze Level
• TownePlace Suites® by Marriott Mississauga – Airport Corporate Centre – GreenLeaders Bronze Level
• Hilton Montreal Bonaventure – GreenLeaders Bronze Level
• Fairfield Inn & Suites® by Marriott St. John’s Newfoundland – GreenLeaders Silver Level
• Harbour Towers Hotels & Suites – GreenLeaders Silver Level
“Sustainability and social responsibility are two pillars that we embrace as a part of our corporate culture and daily operations at our hotels, so to be cited as environmentally-friendly accommodations by TripAdvisor is truly an honour,” says Steve Giblin, President and CEO, SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “We are always thinking of ways to reduce our impact on the environment and our recent partnerships with Clean the World and Tree Canada are among the many sustainability initiatives we’ve implemented to achieve this goal.”
SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts has partnered with Clean the World Foundation to collect and recycle hotel soap and bottled bath amenities to help reduce the incidence of life-threatening hygiene-related illnesses both domestically and around the globe. All SilverBirch properties are participating in this program in a bid to save lives and the environment.
The company also partnered with Tree Canada earlier this year to plant 3,000 trees in five regions across Canada by introducing a new electronic pay statement system for its 3,000 associates at all of its hotels. The planting of the 3,000 trees contributed to Tree Canada’s 10,000 Tree Challenge, a campaign to plant 10,000 trees by Earth Day (April 22) 2014 in an effort to offset carbon emissions. In addition to planting trees, Radisson Hotel Saskatoon made an additional donation to the organization.
In Newfoundland, Fairfield Inn & Suites® by Marriott St. John’s participated in a month-long recycling contest for the Multi Materials Stewardship Board. The hotel recycled and delivered 7,428 units of recycling product to the Paradise Recycling Depot, finishing first in the number of units recycled.
SilverBirch has successfully integrated green practices into its property renovations, new builds and daily operations including installing a green roof at the new Halifax hotels and promoting waste reduction and energy efficiency across all properties. Additional efforts include community outreach, education, and a focus on recycling and reducing the amount of materials entering landfill when constructing new hotels. All SilverBirch properties are three, four or five Green Key Certified.
