HALIFAX, NS, June 7, 2012 –The redevelopment of the former Citadel Hotel took a significant step forward last week with the start of excavation. SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts is transforming the site into a mixed-use facility, featuring two hotels, a SilverBirch Conference Centre®, retail space, and an apartment complex with a restaurant that are scheduled to open in early 2014
“SilverBirch is a company that prides itself in building and operating our hotels in a sustainable manner,” said David Philp, Senior Vice President Investment and Portfolio Management for SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “During demolition, which is planned to be completed in August, our goal is to reduce the amount of materials that enter the waste stream. For example, carpets, underlays, toilets, sinks, tubs, doors, miscellaneous mill work, and metals will all be recycled. Even the concrete is being sent to a facility where it can be crushed and re-used.”
The amount of material expected to be recycled includes:
- Approximately 6,500 tonnes of concrete
- An estimated 425 tonnes of metal
- Over 7,400 square metres of carpet and underlay
- An estimated 273 toilets, 305 sinks and 273 tubs
- Over 290 doors
“Even before the demolition started, the company donated and sold a lot of hotel items such as furnishings and appliances. As a company, we believe in extending the life of our furniture, kitchen equipment, exercise equipment, artwork and accessories,” said Trevor Morgan, Regional Vice President, Eastern Canada of SilverBirch. “It’s nice to know elements from the former Citadel Hotel will find new purposes and in some instances help others in need, while reducing the amount of waste during construction.”
Environmental stewardship and sustainability will be considered during construction, too. The new buildings are being designed and constructed to increase environmental performance and create healthier working environments. Driveways and parking lots will be converted to be pedestrian friendly and a green roof is a design feature.
Once operating, the hotel will reduce the use of water through efficient showers and toilets and will implement standards for waste reduction and active recycling programs for staff and guests.
More than 60 workers are currently working on site, with more than 250 expected at the height of construction.
