Interview: Melissa Sydor, Human Resources Coordinator, Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre, Edmonton
“Care” We believe in being there for our guests and each other. We care about what we do, go the extra mile and have fun.
SBHR: Melissa can you tell us a little about yourself?
MS: I started in HR 6 years ago at the Edmonton International Airport with restaurants and retail. I wanted to utilize my psychology degree in a non-clinical atmosphere. In Sept 2009 I came to the Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre, Edmonton to work with the team in HR. A colleague referred me to SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts and I was immediately intrigued by the culture and the direction of the company. Since then I have been having a lot of fun! I am very community oriented and take part in community sports, mainly slow pitch, and volunteering.
SBHR: What does Engagement mean to you?
MS: Engagement means more that coming into work and completing your day to day job. It means looking at the overall hotel, what we can do to help our guests, associates, and our community as an overall team. To mean Engagement encompasses all of our values.
SBHR: Why is the Engagement value so important to you?
MS: As an associate myself, I like to feel cared for, and important. I like how people are friendly, courteous, and know each other. We are more than a team, we are a family!
SBHR: How does the Engagement value guide you in your day to day life?
MS: I am a caring person who enjoys helping others and having fun. Building relationships with other people is something I do on a daily basis, whether it is in my role in SBHR as a Human Resources Coordinator, or in my private life through sports and community volunteering.
SBHR: Why do you think the Engagement value is important to an organization?
MS: In HR, the number 1 reason I hear from associates when asked why they enjoy working with an organization is because they like the people and how they care for each other and their team. This is Engagement! A company who cares about their people is a company people want to work for and will stay working for; they will refer the company to other potential associates, and we will grow!
SBHR: Can you share an example of when you witnessed an associate exemplify Engagement?
MS: One of our associates in our banquet department is an avid gardener. She has an amazing garden at her home where she grows all kinds of flowers. This past summer she wanted to do a little something to show the team she cared. She created beautiful arrangements for various areas of the hotels, for other departments and for guests. This act of kindness to me, exemplifies Engagement!
