Interview: General Manager, Best Western Charlottetown
SBHR: Tell us about yourself Francis.
FH: I am a bald, blue-eyed, colour-blind Montrealer, passionate about food and travel. Living the dream in Charlottetown, enjoying my first GM position, as well as my first role working in English; French being my mother tongue. This year I will work towards attaining my CHA (Certified Hotel Administrator) certification and continuing my learning of Spanish.
SBHR: In your role you are interacting with all departments and associates as well as community members. What values assist you with these interactions?
FH: Truly Engagement is the guiding value here. To me Engagement means being passionate about what you do, Engagement means sharing, Engagement means caring, Engagement means listening, Engagement means showing respect.
SBHR: What value is most important when you think about your role?
FH: Definitely Integrity. As a leader, one must be true to his words, and treat others with the utmost fairness and impartiality.
SBHR: what do you “value” the most in your role?
FH: Not only in my role, but in this company: the Growth factor. I have had, over the 10 years with this company, the opportunity to grow myself (from Assistant F&B Manager to GM), but also to help others grow into higher positions, through relationship building, training, referral, coaching and mentoring.
SBHR: Of all of our values, which one influences your day to day activities the most?
FH: Quality. As a former Standards Auditor, I have learned that perception of quality often relies on details and little things. Training needs to be focused on doing 100% of the job well, paying attention to detail and giving our guests a consistent service level.
SBHR: What helps you fight the “Winter Blahs”?
FH: Cooking, of course!
SBHR: What are you looking forward to the most in 2015?
FH: With the PEI 2014 celebrations behind us, 2015 could be a challenging year. What made us successful in 2014 was the unity of our team, albeit salaried or hourly. I look forward to seeing this team perform at full potential and achieve their goals.
