Chef Scott Torgerson Wins Gold at Gold Medal Plates SaskatoonSaskatoon, SK, October 31, 2016 – Competing against seven of the city’s culinary best, Radisson Hotel Saskatoon’s Executive Chef Scott Torgerson claimed first place at Gold Medal Plates Culinary Competition in Saskatoon. Torgerson’s win came less than 24 hours after returning home victorious from the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the largest and most prestigious culinary competition in the world.

“It is an honour to win a Gold Medal at home in Saskatoon,” says Chef Torgerson. “I share this award with my incredible team at the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon and Aroma Resto Bar. It is because of their continuous hard work, dedication and support that allows us the ability to prepare and compete against some of the world’s best chefs.”

The gold medal win secures Chef Torgerson a coveted spot at the Canadian Culinary Championships, The Gold Medal Plates Finale, in Kelowna, BC, February 3-4, 2017. The win is one of many recent accolades for Chef Torgerson. As a member of the 2016 Culinary Team Canada Olympic team, Chef Torgerson helped win three gold and two silver medals in Erfurt, Germany, before arriving home to defend his 2015 second place finish at last year’s Gold Medal Plates Saskatoon.

“We are exceptionally proud of Chef Torgerson for his success,” says Steve Giblin, President & CEO of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “We believe our chefs are some of the best in the world and these awards are well-deserved recognition of their continuous dedication to culinary excellence.”

Chef Torgerson’s winning plate featured a black trumpet crusted roast elk and Cactus Lake beef tenderloin with porcini and sunchoke foam, plated with broccoli puree, parsnip, beef tendon puff, pearl onion, and micro cress. Helping to balance the flavours, the dish was paired with the 2014 Inniskillin Discovery Series Zinfandel from Inniskillin, Okanagan, BC.

Judged by a panel of eight, each dish was awarded points based on visual presentation, texture, technical achievement, taste, wine compatibility, and wow factor. Visitors can experience Chef Torgerson’s award-winning culinary skills at Aroma Resto Bar at the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon.

Founded in 2003, Gold Medal Plates Culinary Competition is an annual celebration of Canadian Excellence in cuisine, wine, the arts and athletic achievement. Every year, premier chefs across Canada compete for the gold, silver and bronze medal. Net proceeds from Gold Medal Plates are given to the Canadian Olympic Foundation which supports Olympic and Paralympic athletes and high performance programs. To date, the competition has raised over $11 million to support Canadian athletes.

Vancouver, BC, July 19, 2016 – SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts is pleased to announce the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre in Fort McMurray has re-opened to the public following the devastating wildfires that led to the evacuation of the city in May.

Quality Hotel Fort McMurray Re-Opens!

While the hotel did not sustain fire damage, smoke from the wildfires required an extensive clean-up of the hotel and conference facilities. The hotel was also used to temporarily accommodate over 200 first responders who were battling the wildfires.

“The people of Fort McMurray have demonstrated remarkable resilience under extremely difficult circumstances,” says Steve Giblin, President and CEO of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “Life is slowly returning to normal and all of us at SilverBirch and the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre are proud to be a part of the rebuilding of Fort McMurray.”

The Quality Hotel and Conference Centre has a new General Manager, Jayakrishna (JK) Tiramula, a Fort McMurray resident and hospitality sector veteran, and a new Executive Chef, Christina Bowie, also a Fort McMurray resident who has been building her culinary skills, starting at just 15 years old, in a variety of roles in different parts of Canada.

Guests returning to the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre can expect some exciting changes. The hotel is introducing a new menu for its popular sports bar The Den (re-opening on August 1), while Table 63 Restaurant will continue offering its famous hot breakfast buffet, with fan favourites like smoked salmon and double house smoked bacon, along with some new menu choices. And finally, the exterior will be transformed with new landscaping.

During the evacuation, SilverBirch’s Radisson Hotel Edmonton South, Double Tree by Hilton and Home2 Suites by Hilton West Edmonton accommodated Quality Hotel employees and their families as well as many displaced citizens of Fort McMurray.  In addition, more than $61,000 was raised by SilverBirch hotels through the Friends in Need campaign. Between June 18 and 25, each hotel designated $5 from every room night booked, with the proceeds going to Local 2494 Fort McMurray Fire Fighters Relief Fund.
